Theme:
Crossing Borders, Breaking Boundaries
The theme for the GK YGAT 09 focuses on the impact of the tour.
Literally, the participants will cross over borders from Australia
to other countries as they embark on
an adventure of a lifetime.
The trip will be two weeks of fun and excitement, but more
importantly it will be filled with positive contributions to
the poor in the urban and rural slums of these countries. Symbolically, the adventurers of the tour will
break established boundaries of the wide gap between the rich
and the poor. Participants will break out of their comfort
zone, and will be immersed in the lifestyle of the local
people by staying in Gawad Kalinga villages. They will
help build homes within their villages while
interacting with the richness of the local people, customs and
environments.
Mission
Uniquely, the mission of GK YGAT 09 is to strive to go to
communities which, not only need our contribution, but also
contain significant heritage and are examples of the beautiful
personality of the local culture. It is hoped that by going to
regions which historically witnessed great heroes and events
of the past, that todays heroes of the GK YGAT 09 will aspire
for greatness and change, as did the heroes that have passed
before them.
The trip will include building homes for families, interacting with the locals and learning more about the GK programs
of Shelter and Site Development, Health, Productivity, Values Formation, Health and Community Empowerment.

Be part of a new generation of heroes! Discover new horizons.
Come and experience the miracle and adventure of a lifetime.
Discover the hero in you!

Live a Legacy. Volunteer for GK. Make a Difference.

It's not the destination, but the journey that matters...

See what others say about their GK YGAT experience
"…the reality was even though we were building
two houses, I knew there were many more that
needed to be built." (Bosco, GK YGAT 04)
"It really showed me that we might be doing
something on a small scale but put together
it's something huge..." (Jamike, GK YGAT 05)
"I thought I came to help them. I thought they were poor. But I was more poor than them. They gave me their love. They built my inner peace that I was seeking. It was like it was them who was helping me. For every sacrifices that I made, to come to the Philippines was worth it." (Richard John, GK YGAT 06)
"I climatised to the area quickly and the cold
showers weren't cold anymore. The dusty
roads weren't dusty anymore, it became like
home..." (Marilee, GK YGAT 04)
"The GK experience has allowed me to make
invaluable friendships not only with my
companions but also to those people young
and old I met each day of the trip…" (Christine, GK YGAT 05)
"Despite the many hardships that people face there, we were amazed by the warm welcome we always received and hospitality of many Filipino families. Even families who had almost nothing shared what little they had. Such generosity was very humbling." (Adrienne Vella, GK YGAT 06)
"I came here to be the hero full of arrogance and
pride. I thought to help the weak and small and
sadder ones than I. But somewhere down the line, I
could not see, that the one who needed saving was
me." (Eleazar Arranz, GK YGAT07)
"The GK experience has instilled in me a greater sense
of pride in the Philippines and its people. I’ve also
experienced firsthand that all you need is love and a
sense of belonging in order to live a fruitful life." (Joseph Oconer, GK YGAT 07)
"After YGAT, I am convinced that GK is an inspired
movement that transforms not only the beneficiaries
but the GK workers and volunteers as well." (Geraldine Pace, GK YGAT 07)
"I realised that I have so much to give back in return to help others, and how fortunate I
am to have been given this opportunity." (Bianca Lucas, GK YGAT 08)
"As an individual, I am proud to say that GK really is the hope of the poor in action and it’s
about time that the opportunity is finally here to sustain the global
community out of poverty." (Geffin Musa, GK YGAT 07)
"Now when I think of Mindanao, words that come to mind are natural, diverse,
challenging and hope-filled. But I never would have known had I not taken the
challenge and decided to go to Mindanao in the first place." (Julia Berg Perez, GK YGAT 08)
