Bianca Lucas (Miss GK NSW) was crowned Miss GK Australia 2007 in a well-attended celebration held in Melbourne, Victoria.
The MGKA program was initiated by GK
ANCOP Australia in 2004, to raise
awareness for Gawad Kalinga (‘Giving
Care’), a holistic program for the
poorest of the poor, aimed at making a
difference in their lives, by restoring their dignity, providing them homes, education,
livelihood and looking after their well-being. Participants to the Search for MGKA are
active in GK Youth Great Adventure Tour, which gives them an opportunity to immerse
in the lives of families living in numerous GK villages in the Philippines, sharing the
experience of building homes for the poor, and educating the children.
MGKA has helped build three Miss GK Villages since its inception in 2004 – and hopes
to pave the way for more future GK Villages through the tireless efforts of the MGKA
participants.
The MGKA 2007 was another successful event. Marcy Mission, MGKA National
Chairperson, acknowledged the contributions of various volunteers to make MGKA
2007 a reality. Special mention was given to Marissa Vedar who headed the
Committee for the MGKA Coronation Night, together with Lolit Navarro; Loida and
Denis Morante from Queensland; Carina Garcia, Edna Longhurst and Josie Pangilinan
from New South Wales, and the GK Youth.
We are also grateful for the previous Title holders, namely: Loredana Zedda (2004);
Rachel Franze’ (2005); Karla Magayanes (2006), for giving their time and talent
towards making a difference in the lives of the poorest of the poor.
And now for their gift of selflessness and passion, Bianca Lucas (Miss GK Australia
2007) and the other participants to MGKA 2007 have given the gift of dignity to 50
families who are beneficiaries of GK Village in Boac, Marinduque.
Marcy also acknowledged and commended the contributions and support of the MGKA,
past and present, families and friends for continuously supporting the MGKA Program.
He quipped, “We saw this dedication of the previous candidates and their families and
friends in NSW, and the trend has become infectious through the other States, such as
Victoria and Queensland and the ACT. Somehow the Lord has brought us this event
for a purpose, and we know that it does not end after each Coronation Night.”
The legacy of MGKA will continue to inspire young people in making a difference in the
lives of our less fortunate brothers and sisters throughout the world.
“Planning for MGKA 2008 will begin in earnest,” the tireless MGKA National
Chairperson announced.
AND by the way, MGKA 2007 raised $72, 280!
