Gerakan Kepedulian, as it is known in Indonesia means “to give care”.
In Jakarta International School, a social service club called GK Club is affiliated with GK Indonesia, the Indonesian arm of Gawad Kalinga.
The GK Club go to the GK sites (Kampung Dumpit, Joglo or Klender) on a monthly basis, and basically spend time with GK kids that are roughly their same age. Last year, activities such as soccer and other games allowed them to form relationships with the beneficiaries and families in the GK sites. They recently performed during the UN Day and had a Bake Sale for GK. This is also an excellent opportunity for IB students to earn CAS hours.
This year, the group will continue their monthly visits and will also start on their fundraising program. Last 5 February 2008, the group collected basic supplies such as soap, blankets and clothing for the six needy communities that work with Yayasan Emmanuel. A proportion of these supplies were diverted to GK Dumpit as it was adversely affected by floods the previous week.
GK Club will be raising money for books which will be used in the GK organization’s informal education program for out-of-school youth.
A Facebook group serves as an extension to GK Club’s on campus meetings. Information is posted and updated here on a regular basis. So, for all of you GK Club members out there in Indonesia, JOIN! And invite your other fellow GK Club members! The GK Club Office is in Room B3, Jakarta International School.
