“Bigger Programs. Bigger Dreams. Bigger Possibilities. Get ready to be RADICAL for GK!” These are the main text captions that can be seen in the latest GK 2009 teaser video and it is an implication that it will definitely be another exciting year in GK1mB Australia. Following on from the milestone events last year, the GK1mB Admin Committee together with ANCOP and GK Youth Australia has contrived on expanding the existing programs and GK projects here in Australia to cater for the increasing number of volunteers and to ensure that “No one is left behind”.

The year may have just started however the alluring force of Gawad Kalinga has already gathered more than 100 youth from Australia to experience GK through the Great Adventure Tours (GK Youth and Youth For Christ Oceania) this January 2009. In fact, the first GK1mB Assembly which will be in March 2009 will also coincide with The GK Harvest – an annual event that began in 2006 wherein previous GAT participants share and showcase their inspiring GK experiences to the audience.

All registered members of GK1mB are strongly encouraged to attend the Quarterly Assemblies and most importantly the GK1mB Empowerment Day. “The Heart, Spirit & Mind of GK”, “Radical Stewardship” and “Envision, Endurance & Excellence”, are some of the stimulating topic themes that will be discussed as part of the Empowerment Day and Assemblies. It is compulsory for all registered GK1mB members to attend an Empowerment Day in order to receive their Official GK1mB Hero’s Card.

GK1mB is also proud to launch the BIG 5 GK events in Australia starting with the Oceania GK Congress in Melbourne, Victoria this May 2009. Bong Bernardo heads the Steering Committee for this special event to promote awareness of the work of GK amongst partners and prospective partners in the Oceania Region as well as upscale the recruitment of volunteers through the new GK1mB program. The 2009 GK1mB Concert Rally, City 2 Surf, GK One Day & Expo and The Gawad Kalinga Concert are all included in this year’s BIG 5 GK Events.

Although there are the BIG 5 Events, other projects and programs will still be running throughout the year. These include new projects such as GK Ambassador, the Bayani Challenge (Sulu, Philippines) and GK YGAT Cambodia. Successful programs that have been held in previous years will also continue in 2009 for instance GK YGAT Papua New Guinea, GK YO! (Young Once) GAT and the REVERSE GK Youth Great Adventure Tour – bringing GK SIGA members and fulltime workers to Australia to share with us their stories of hope and transformation plus interact with our different groups and partners of GK.
Training, meetings and workshops for all the 7 areas of volunteering in GK1mB will be conducted throughout the year so it is advisable for all members to be informed by regularly visiting the GK1mB website www.gk1mb.org for upcoming events and latest news blogs. The 2009 leaders for the different areas of volunteering will be revealed and announced at the next GK1mB Assembly.

As of January 2009, there are 77 officially registered members in GK1mB Australia. The GK1mB Admin Committee encourages anyone who would like to participate in any of the GK programs and projects to register online and “Be counted today!”

Get ready. Be involved. Find out what it means to be RADICAL for GK in 2009.
