Date Posted: 1st July 2009

The GKYGAT (Gawad Kalinga Youth Great Adventure Tour) team organised the first breakfast forum for 2009 in preparation for the GATs later this year in Papua New Guinea and early next year in the Philippines. This year's first breakfast forum was held on Saturday, 20th June at St. Patrick's Parish Hall, Parramatta. The GKYGAT team was amped up and ready to take on the challenge and tell all who came about GKYGAT to both locations.

This time around, there were information stalls for both GATs to Papua New Guinea and Philippines, GK1MB (GK: 1 Million Builders) and also the latest GAT experiences of the Outreach GAT to Cambodia and the Bayani Challenge. All stallpersons were ready to share accounts of their experiences with all attendees. Most notable was the Cambodia stall, that included a cutout of a Cambodian temple that they were lucky enough to visit whilst there and other great looking mementos and photos.

The start of the presentation saw the GKYGAT 2010 team take to the stage, following a morning news television show format with Josanne Musa as a presenter, JR Diaz and Irene Mayo as news anchors and a few random GK Youth as fans outside the windows, peering in. Through the presentation, the attendees learned about GK, the GAT programmes, and also heard personal accounts from both GATs.

The first sharer featured Alex Fraser. He attended GKYGAT 2009 and felt very priveleged to have gone to GAT. Having been to the Phlippines previously, he thought that he knew all that he needed to know about the Philippines. He saw the poverty in the Philippines and when he heard about GK, he jumped at the opportunity to come along to the GAT. He said that the experience was really invaluable and made him see another side of the Philippines.

The other sharer featured Geffin Musa. He was a previous attendee to the Papua New Guinea GAT in 2007 and he painted more of a picture of the cultural difference that Papua New Guinea had compared to what he experienced before in going to GATs in the Philippines. Being that in Papua New Guinea, the village has a few different tribes living within the area, the lifestyle they have, and also explaining the general culture of the Papua New Guinea people, and how his experience has changed his outlook on life.

There was also opportunities for people who were wanting to sign up or to start fundraising for the GKYGAT to begin. Not to mention, a great spread of food organised by Rhona Cuaresma and other GK Youth.

Overall, the day was enjoyable, informative and inspiring. The GKYGAT team would like to thank all who attended and helped out on the day.
