My GK Experience in PNG

By LIBBY RAJAKONE

Dina Namona (Good Day) to you all! My name is Libby Rajakone and I am very proud to be part of GK YGAT and to have traveled on my very first rewarding trip to PNG this September 2008.

From my life experience, I believe that God has His own plan for each of us and what ever happens in our life is never an accident, all we need is trust in Him. I came to know about GK when I met Joekarl through my work, his exciting stories and experiences in GK inspired me. It’s amazing that I listened not knowing that I would be part of it too.

Not too long after, energized by the WYD events, I attended a couple of GK forums and I was touched by some of the testimonies. Though I had other travel plans organised something inside of me was so keen on taking this trip to PNG. Without hesitating I decided to go along with what my heart said, even though I was getting negative opinions about traveling to PNG.

I thought, by helping the less fortunate in PNG I could do something good in my life. I did not know what else to expect, but trusted in God that He wanted me to do this for some reason. So I paid my registration fee, got all my vaccination shots and tablets and paid my tickets. We embarked on this journey on 15 September '08, with Joekarl as our best ever leader, and five others - Annabelle, Brian, Corina, Lalaih and Rose.

What was unforgettable, for me, was that the PNG Independence Day and my birthday fell on the same day, 16 September 2008, and I was able to celebrate it in a PNG Mongee style!

The most memorable experience, however, was the time we spent with the marvelous people in Gerehu Stage 6 and the ‘never ending love’ that we all received. I felt the presence of God in among us. I realised what GK has created is not just houses and a medical centre for the village but a small heaven and a corner stone to unite everyone.

The other mesmerising thing that touched my heart was the members who dedicated their lives as part of GK and CFC to bring the best out of PNG, by one person and one village at a time. It was heart breaking when we had to leave for Sydney as we were farewelled by the GK villagers with tears of love and lots of memories to take back home.

I had the best time of my life as a GKY GATer to PNG. Being part of GK taught me self discipline, love and strength to take on things in life. I visualise GK as a bridge linking everyone, and we are the piers of that bridge. The foundation of the piers is embedded in the love of God.
