I’ve always been proud to be a Filipino despite the current problems that exist in the country. However, going on this year’s GKYGAT has reaffirmed my pride in being a Pinoy.
Filipinos are known for their ability to survive wherever they are and in whatever situations they are in. By spending time with the less fortunate people of the Philippines, you are bound to be inspired by their stories and their strong will to live.
A young boy named Rambo from GK Brookside Village shared with us his story as a garbage scavenger. He remembered many nights scavenging past midnight and having to go to school the next day. One day, he asked himself why he was still scavenging until the early hours of the morning whilst his classmates were already tucked into their beds at home.
Fortunately, GK has now provided a home and a community for Rambo and his family to live in. He no longer needs to scavenge for a living. Now, his dream is to help other less fortunate people through GK.
Upon returning from GKYGAT, I have developed a greater appreciation for what I have in Australia. I am truly blessed to have a home, an education, a family, a community and all the necessities that so many of my fellow Pinoys do not have.
The experiences and the stories of the Filipino people have urged me to make the most of and to be grateful for what I have and to share my time and talents with those who are in need.
